First in a series, we take a look at some of the local heroes on the AFC Teams.
Ash and Smash over the last few years have dedicated their playing days with SWSC/Arsenal . The player’s work ethic which has really endeared them to the players in the club sets the stall for other players to achieve and follow in the the foot steps of this weeks local heroes
1. What was it like when you first put a foot on a field at Arsenal
ASH: It was a little intimidating because I was playing rec at the time , but training with Arsenal was fun.
SMASH:
I felt scared or intimidated because I felt as if the experienced players were so good and I have to work hard to measure up to their reputation, but I did have confidence that if I worked hard I could hang.
2. With a few seasons under your belt, how do you feel about yourself now and have you improved?
ASH I have more confidence and feel I Am always improving.
SMASH:Before I even played for Arsenal, I didn’t even know half of the skills I know now. I definitely have learned so much and have improved unbelievably.
3. What has been your highlight so far at Arsenal?
ASH: I would have to say my 1st goal for the Club against FC-Heat and the Danville Summer Camp.
Smash: My highlight so far has been every game I have played with an Arsenal jersey on. Every game has been fun and challenging and I have learned something new each game.
4. What players have you enjoyed training with and If you could step into someones boots for a day who would it be??
Ash: Razor and Sherlock, Whitey and Quinny.
Quinny’s shoes because he is very physical.
Smash:
I learn something new from anyone I train with, which I enjoy because it makes me a better player. If I could step into anyone’s “boots”, it would probably be any U.S. National team player so I can see how hard they train.
5. What is it like to work with the older players and are you more experienced because of this?
ASH: It is a lot of fun and I love the experience. The older players in the club have made me feel very welcome and looked after me.
Smash: It can be scary because the olders are bigger, but when I train with them it definitely improves my skill level and increases my speed of play.
6.Your Best performance
Ash: Probably the game at Surf, I was voted "man of the match"
Smash:My best performance this year has been every game this season because each game I interpret my skills I have learned from each week into the game
7. What are your long term goals as a soccer player?
Ash: To play through college and hopefully even further.
Smash:
To earn a scholarship for soccer to any U.C college and to further my soccer career through coaching and teaching the game of soccer.
8. What’s been your most difficult challenge in club soccer?
ASH: Training 3 days a week and getting my homework done.
Smash:
Staying fit! It’s hot almost everyday, which is hard to train in that kind of weather, but I am glad I can push through because it makes me a better player.
9. What advise can you give to players who come into club soccer a little nervous
Ash: Believe in yourself and never quit.
Smash: Just to work hard and show your stuff! If you give your all, the outcome will be great. Effort is a really big key and if you just work hard the game will come a lot easier to you.
